Due to its outstanding features, the compound ’EMCOL liquid mix’ serving as base for our product, the SZÉFI cold asphalt, is used under invested names at airports of several countries. The products are distributed under the name RRD Standard at several places but, regarding the production technology, they are identical to our product. Among airports, we can mention Gatwick, Heathrow, Tokyo, Bucharest (Otopeni), Timisoara, Cluj-Napoca where it is used for repairing the minor pavement defects of the runways and the rest areas and to prevent damages caused by gravel.

The SZÉFI cold asphalt is the compound of the special bitumen ’EMCOL liquid mix’ protected by English patent and natural materials (fine crushed stone and sand). EMCOL has been manufactured and developed from the end of the ’70s and, currently, it is directly distributed in over 30 countries and used under license in over 65 countries.

As the sole rightsholder of the English license in Romania and Hungary, the SC. Z&Z PIRO SRL. (Miercurea Ciuc) has been the manufacturer and the supplier of the product since 1997.

General description

Due to its simple use in any weather conditions and to the 3-year guarantee provided by the manufacturer, the SZÉFI Widely-Used Instant Cold Asphalt combines the advantages of technologies used for fixing potholes and the ones used for repair works after point-like opening of road surface.

Nowadays, cold asphalt is used in cold weather, which is not a long-term solution so it can be used only to mitigate damage; the hot asphalt repair is more durable but more expensive and may only be used in appropriate weather conditions.

 Technological advantages

Technological summary

The SZÉFI cold asphalt compound may be used quickly and effectively in any weather conditions and in all seasons (at a temperature between -40°C and 60°C), without particular personnel and machine requirements, in case of minor asphalt and concrete repair works (e.g.: for fixing potholes or eliminating freezing). The cold asphalt is suitable to repair defects of road pavements and for levelling, to eliminate sporadic defects of pavement and potholes durably (at least for 3 years). The traffic area may be opened for the traffic immediately after the repair.

Permits

The SZÉFI complies with the necessary manufacturing design and technology requirements [technical specification for roads number e-ÚT 08.02.22:2002 (ÚT 2-3.506:2002)] and has the NMÉ permit defining conditions for application and the required permission of road operator.

Advantages of the product

  • it may be used in any weather conditions at a temperature between -40°C and 60°C
  • it provides road inspectors with immediate opportunity to repair anywhere, any time
  • the repaired road section may be opened for the traffic immediately
  • it requires neither special tools or equipment nor investment
  • it does not require special expertise
  • it is easy to use and transport and can be carried also in hands
  • it is extremely flexible, but not corrosive and it adheres to metal
  • practical bucket packaging
  • the warranty period is longer (6 months) than in case of sack packaging (no more than 2 months)
  • the opened bucket can be resealed, the remaining cold asphalt can be used later
  • it provides safe and organized storage and transportation
  • quick and durable result
  • suitable for both professional and home use

Areas of use

  • To correct the errors and fix the potholes of any asphalt or concrete road
  • Repair works after point-like opening of the road surface (following drainage, public utility and telecommunication works)
  • Public roads, highways, parking areas
  • Sidewalks, stairs, promenades
  • To correct cracks, potholes, split asphalt or uneven roads with varying depth
  • To repair damages caused by frost and thaw
  • To repair melted, blistered or parched road
  • To repair roads being right beside metal-related areas (structures, rail tracks, manhole covers, drains)
  • Airport runways, resting areas
  • Railway stations, ports, ravines, channels, canals
  • Bridges and structures
  • Storehouses, industrial buildings

Comparison

In case of using hot asphalt

  • it is necessary to have special expertise and to maintain and operate special machines or to order a service providing all these, which is more expensive
  • appropriate weather conditions are needed
  • the quick repair of road sections with high traffic is not possible
  • the repaired section of the road may not be opened for traffic immediately
  • it is required to asphalt an area of at least 200 sq meters (works at the surface of 1 to 50 sq meters are not undertaken or much more expensive because of the filling of the 20-ton car only half or because of the maintaining of the 120 °C, etc.)
  • the poorly accessible areas (e.g.: platforms, railway areas) are excluded

In case of using other cold asphalt

  • there is no guarantee
  • the warranty period is shorter
  • there are disadvantages of sack packaging
    • it can be torn
    • in case of storing after opening, it shortly becomes unusable
    • uncomfortable use
  • appropriate weather is needed
